Where Have All the Nurses Gone?

OFFICIAL governament data show that 164,239 out of 332,206 registered Filipino nurses as 2003 have left the Philippines to look for work abroad.
According to the Philippine Professional Regulatory Commission the total supply of registered nurses totaled 332,206 as of 2003. Of these, it is estimated that 58% or 193,223 were employed either here in the country or abroad. About 15% were employed in the country, of which 10% work in government health facilities, four percent in the private sector and the remaining one percent in the nursing academe.
Eighty-five percent were likely to be employed outside of the country.
The data also show that seven of the government physician doctores are leaving after completing the nursing course and licensed nurse medics.
